Volunteer Spotlight: Matt Smitha
Since his first volunteering event, Face Off With Cancer’s second annual 3-on-3 tournament in 2013, Matt has had a big part in the successful execution of this and other local events. As a resident of Paso Robles, Matt works as a data management specialist for a local biotechnology company. In his spare time, he enjoys hiking the mountains of the central coast, wine tasting and reading Craig Johnson mysteries.
Matt started watching hockey in the early nineties, and started off playing street hockey not long after he got his first hockey stick for Christmas. He started off by doing stick-time and skating in college, but soon found himself in the parking lot practicing stick-handling drills and face-offs during his lunch breaks. His current favorite teams include the Anaheim Ducks, a fan since 1993, and the Connecticut Whale.
Having lost several family members and friends to cancer, Matt has also had several more survive and thrive in turn. The opportunity to combine his passion for hockey, scientific education and the ability to make a difference in the community at large had influenced Matt in building a strong relationship with Face Off With Cancer. Matt also expresses,“I also hold a lot of respect for the people who make up the Face Off With Cancer family and to help be a part of something that influential with them is special to me.”
Matt’s ability to be a jack-of-all-trades and eagerness to help has made him a valuable asset to Face Off With Cancer. From working the tournaments to manning the organization's booths at the Staples Center events, you’ll always find Matt ready to tackle anything! We would like to gratefully and sincerely thank Matt for his continued support with Face Off With Cancer!
