Face Off With Cancer Joins Sarah Mildengren in Her Fight With Lung Cancer

Meet Sarah Mildengren, a devoted mother from Thousand Oaks, CA who is currently battling lung cancer. Through the incredible bonds within the Southern California ice hockey community, Sarah and her family have been nominated and unanimously selected to be one of Face Off With Cancer's 2016 Beneficiary Families.

Sarah was diagnosed with stage 4 non-small cell lung cancer in both lungs on April 27th, 2015 with the main tumor measuring about 11 cm in size. Since then, she has been through five rounds of chemotherapy and multiple cancer drugs. In March 2016, the main tumor had shrunk to 5 cm in size and her left lung was completely clear, but a more recent scan has shown that the tumor has grown back by about 1 cm. This has left the Mildengrens seeking a different treatment plan for Sarah.

On the advise of a family friend and fellow cancer caretaker, Scott Slinger, the Mildengrens have met with a nutritionist to optimize Sarah's care regimen through diet and supplements. Combined with planned trips to the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, they have taken Sarah's future treatment by the horns, but are going to have to do a lot of it out of pocket. This is where Mr. Slinger's nomination through Face Off With Cancer comes into play.

The Mildengren Family is no stranger to the Southern California hockey community. Their family business, Hockey Alley, has trained some of the best hockey players to come out of Southern California since 1989.

Having provided private lessons to many of the Face Off With Cancer staff members and supporters over the year, Hockey Alley was eager to be one of the first ever sponsors of the annual 3-on-3 tournaments and has continued to do so every year since.

Face Off With Cancer is excited to have the opportunity to give back to the Mildengren family and join them in their battle with lung cancer. We hope that their story inspires you to do the same.
